Claude in Google Sheets, Docs and Slides: how Claude for Google Workspace works
From October 6, 2026, Claude is no longer just a chat to open in another tab: he works directly inside Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, that is Docs, Google Sheets and Slides. It reads the open file, understands what you've selected, and edits the document without forcing you to copy and paste. For companies using Google Workspace, this is one of the most tangible changes of the year, and also one of the easiest to try.

What is Claude for Google Workspace?
Claude for Google Workspace is an add-on that brings Claude to a sidebar within Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, in public beta on all paid plans starting October 6, 2026. Claude reads the open file, sees selected text, cells, or slides, and applies changes directly to the document.
Along with the add-on, Anthropic also released the connectors For Docs, Sheets, and Slides: They work in the opposite direction and allow you to create and edit Google files from within Claude's chat. The sidebar features the same templates, connectors, and skills you use in Claude, so you can, for example, retrieve data from your CRM and write it directly into a sheet.
Claude in Google Sheets, Docs and Slides: what he can do
| App | What does Claude do? |
|---|---|
| Google Docs | Correct a sentence or change the style of a title without affecting the surrounding formatting; for larger changes, it offers suggestion cards for approval. |
| Google Sheets | Write formulas, create native pivot tables and charts, add tabs, clean and merge data with Python before writing it back to the sheet |
| Google Slides | Create new slides using existing presentation layouts and themes; report overlapping elements, text that runs off the slide, or text that is difficult to read. |
The strong point is the context. Claude doesn't generate a new document to re-layout: he works within yours, respecting styles, themes, and structure. You no longer have to bring work to AI, AI comes into your work.

How to activate it and who can use it
Requires a paid Claude plan (Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise) and installation from the Google Workspace Marketplace. There are just a few steps:
- Install Claude for Google Workspace from the Google Workspace Marketplace.
- Open a document, sheet or presentation and go to Extensions, Claude, Open Claude.
- Log in with your Claude account.
- To work in reverse, that is, from Claude's chat to Google files, activate the connectors Docs, Sheets, and Slides in Settings.
Security and Permissions: What Claude Sees
Claude only sees files you already have access to: permissions mirror Google's sharing permissions. If a colleague hasn't shared a document with you, Claude can't read it for you.
By default, the mode is active. “Ask before editing”Claude describes the change and applies it only after you give him or her the green light. Some actions, such as inserting links or images from the web, always require approval. Enterprise customers also benefit from the existing controls, such as API Compliance, customer-managed encryption keys, and audit log export.
The limits of the beta
- Comments: comments cannot be managed from the sidebar in Docs, but are accessible via chat connectors.
- Graphs in slides: Charts inserted into Presentations are images, they do not remain linked to the data in the sheet.
- Browser: At this stage the beta does not support Firefox.
- Direct changes: Approved changes are applied to the file, they do not remain as suggestions in Google's review system.

Claude or Gemini inside Google Workspace?
Gemini is already natively integrated into Google Workspace; Claude arrives as an alternative for those who already use it for other work. The choice doesn't depend so much on which model is "best" overall, but on where your workflows live: if your team uses Claude with connectors, skills, and projects, having it also within Google files avoids breaking the context between two different assistants. For a more detailed comparison, read our guide on ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini: Which AI Should You Choose?.
It's the same movement that's redesigning all office software: Anthropic brings documents, presentations and even animated videos with Claude Motion inside the assistant, while projects like GridCraft and WordCraft remake Excel and Word with AI agents in mind. We talk about this in the article on Word and Excel clones and custom software.
How to use it well in your business
- Start with repetitive tasks: clean up data in Sheets, standardize the titles of a long document, update a presentation with the quarterly slides.
- Keep approval active some changes, at least in the first few weeks.
- Always check the numbersFormulas and pivot tables should be verified before ending up in a report.
- Define common rules: which files can Claude modify and which cannot, especially if they contain customer data.
- Form the teamThe tool is simple, but asking carefully makes the difference between real help and a waste of time.
If you want to set up these steps methodically, this is the work we do with the Artificial intelligence consulting for companies.

Conclusion
Claude for Google Workspace is still in beta, but the direction is clear: artificial intelligence is moving away from a website to visit and becoming a feature of the tools you use every day. For a company using Google Workspace, it's worth trying it out now, for specific tasks and with clear rules.
The tool is just a click away. The value lies in how you choose to use it.
